Concept project for the book
The Secret Lake
Continuous front cover and back cover (40 x 25 cm) for the best seller
"The Secret Lake", by Karen Inglis. The illustration was made using the watercolor technique with digital finishing.
The art was applied in book mockups.
A little bit of the painting process:

The idea for the cover illustration came from the journey through time that Stella and Tom, the main characters of the book, make after discovering a secret tunnel, a hole they find in the middle of a garden full of oak trees.
In chapter 4 of the book, there is a scene where Stella and Tom go out by 10 o'clock to unravel the mystery of a missing dog and find a ladder set against an earthen wall:

" 'Tom, I think we’ve found an underground tree!’ she yelled.' [...] Dangling one of her feet still lower she found another branch to rest on."

For the back cover, I thought it was important to illustrate the boat, found by the characters early in the story buried in the garden, and the lake, that gives the title of the book:

"The rounded lid of the treasure chest seemed to go on forever as the patch Tom dug grew wider and wider. And then Stella’s pale blue eyes widened.
‘Tom!’ she whispered in disbelief. ‘It’s not a box! It’s a boat! ’
‘A boat!’ said Tom. ‘[...] "
"The sun-drenched grass below looked soft, so Stella jumped the final couple of meters down. [...] She looked up to see the most beautiful lake, surrounded by crimson pink flowering bushes, stretching away in front of her."

The main idea of the project is to create a Brazilian version for the front and back cover of the book. Therefore, I also developed the typography with a free translation for the title and abstract.
